Monastery of St. Mary on Zvërnec Island

Redakcja AlbaniaForAll · 26.05.2026

A dozen kilometers north of Vlora, in the middle of the vast Narta Lagoon, lies a small islet covered with cypresses and pines. This is Zvërnec — a place where time seems to flow slower. The island hides one of the most beautiful Albanian sacred monuments: the Orthodox Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Alb. Manastiri i Shën Mërisë).

A long, wooden pier stretches over the shallow lagoon, leading to the island. A walk along it is part of the local ritual — with each step, the hustle and bustle of the coast fades, and the sky, trees, and silhouette of the monastery are reflected in the still water. It is these reflections that make Zvërnec one of the most frequently photographed spots in the Vlora area.

History

The monastery was probably built between the 13th and 14th centuries, during the Byzantine era, and for centuries it was an important center of Orthodox life in southern Albania. The main church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. Around the temple, a small, quiet cemetery has been preserved in the shade of ancient cypresses — a place of reflection that adds a unique, contemplative atmosphere to the island.

Architecture

The complex consists of stone monastic buildings with a characteristic arcaded cloister that surrounds the inner courtyard. Rough stone, red roof tiles, and slender cypresses form a picture that has changed little over centuries. Next to the main church stands a smaller temple with a bell tower, typical of Balkan sacred architecture.

Narta Lagoon and Nature

Zvërnec is not only a monument — it is also a gateway to one of Albania's most valuable natural areas. Narta Lagoon is the second largest lagoon in the country, and its shores and nearby salt pans attract numerous birds, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons. Early morning and sunset are the best times to see the birds and soak in the tranquility of this place.
